Essays / Sample Excerpt # 2

Mary Tudor was born into a legacy of blood and into one of the grisliest periods of the history of England. Sired by King Henry VIII, tyrant ruler of England, and the first of his six wives, Catherine of Aragon, Mary was born into a dynasty already stained with the blood of Henry's victims (Jacoby C38). King Henry VIII broke from the Catholic Church in 1532 and declared himself head of the England church, systematically executing any and everyone who did not acknowledge that claim. Anxious for a male heir to carry on his tyrannical dynasty, Henry obtained a divorce from Catherine in 1533, convinced that she was growing too old to give him the heir he so desperately wanted (Jacoby C38). This decision was also influenced by the lure of Anne Boleyn, whom Henry married shortly after his divorce was granted from Catherine of Aragon. This divorce was achieved through much manipulation and terrorism on the part of Henry, who was also known as "the royal bully" (Smith 24).
